Client requirements:

To eliminate the ongoing expensive repairs required to maintain the operation of their existing gate; essential to securing their primary entrance used by both staff and customers.

Our approach:

CW Plant Hire first contacted us in 2008 as they were having ongoing problems with their cantilever sliding gate that was first installed by another firm many years before. Due to the high amount of daily operations and lack of regular servicing, the system was becoming extremely unreliable and required several repair works to the main structure, the installation of a more serviceable automation system, as well as upgrading the safety package to comply with current regulations.

The gate was removed from site using a 7.5ton lorry with Hiab and delivered to our local fabricator so that we could fully assess and undertake the following works.

  • Removal of the outdated cantilever sliding system and installation of new heavy duty carriages and track. This allowed the gate to slide far easier than it had ever done before and enabled us to very simply straighten the section of gate that was bent during an incident with a digger a few months before.

  • Removal of the generic motor unit and installation of a purpose made sliding gate automation system with digital trimming controls and limit switches. All electrical components were double insulated by fixing them in a new IP rated plastic enclosure high up within the the large steel cabinet; this ensures everything is protected from impact, weather conditions and insects.

  • Installation of a complete safety package, including two pairs of infrared photocells, one 'touch and back off' safety edge on the leading end of the gate and another two safety edges on the upright sections of the cantilever support frame; these were all introduced to eliminate the possibility of personnel becoming trapped or caught in the opening or closing movement of the gate.

  • Shot blasting to remove the flaking paintwork and then a three pack powder coat finish. This not only made a visual improvement to the gate, it also protected all the new sections of steel we had introduced during the fabrication stages.

Outcome:

We were able to achieve our objectives and meet our client's expectations by simply updating the system and installing more suitable components that allow for ease of use and servicing. To date we have only returned once to undertake a minor accidental piece of damage, all other visits have been planned maintenance to service the system.

This gate is located in a high risk area and where space is limited so there will always be a chance that it will receive the odd knock from a passing vehicle but the updates undertaken have made a real difference to the operation and reliability of the system, lowering our client's running costs and maximising the site security.
