Client requirements:

  • An automated gate system to secure the gap between the two existing brick piers.
  • Low to the ground and designed to prevent their young child wandering out on to the 'rat-run' of a country lane.
  • Aesthetically pleasing and low enough as not to obscure their view of the South Downs.
  • Low maintenance and capable of withstanding the extremely high winds they often experience. 

Our approach:

We knew that with a young child living at the property it would be essential to ensure that whatever type of system was installed, safety would have to be the main priority. As a sliding gate system was the only feasible option to secure this entrance, we started by explaining the pros and cons of a sliding gate to the client and what safety devices would be included to protect any shear, crush and drag zones. 

Due to the camber of the driveway, one of our early discussions included the benefits of a cantilever system and how it would prevent the need to level out the drive surface to install a traditional sliding gate track for the gates to run along. During the installation, two concrete foundations would be installed, one for each gate, and a cantilever track integrated in to the final design so that the gates would sit just above the drive surface avoiding the need to interfere with the existing surface.

A simple CAD drawing was presented to the client before the build was undertaken; this enabled them to see for themselves what we had in mind, and more importantly, how it would look once complete.
